FIFA has built a unique cultural identity by showcasing the rare, engaged and challenging works, coming from all horizons. Always close to the new generations of actor and film directors, the Festival has decided to increase the visibility of certain European countries which have lower production resources. An excellent way to encourage the enthusiasm of young film directors.
FIFA invites you to discover Romania through many recent feature films produced there and still unknown in Belgium, in order to highlight the emergence in the recent years of the authors belonging to the “new Romanian cinema”. Cristian Mungiu, Corneliu Porumboiu, Cristi Puiu, Radu Mihaileanu, Cristian Nemescu are all film directors that helped to forge a strong identity to the 7th Romanian Art since 2002. A cinema in full booming and increasingly recognized in the international festivals. Adrian Sitaru, for example, received for the film Picnic the award for the Best Screenplay in last year’s edition of FIFA, while Bobby Paunescu was honored in the opening of the 2009’s edition of the Festival of Venice. A presentation of several films from the Romanian heritage attended by their film directors, will give us the opportunity to complete the panorama of Romanian big screen.
A meeting between Belgian and Romanian film producers will be organized in order to establish links and to develop joint projects between both countries, cultures, visions of cinema. A tribute will be also made to the National University of the Theatrical and Cinematographic Art in Bucharest, on the occasion of its 60th anniversary. An exhibition of posters will complete this focus on Romania.
